A home health aide (HHA) helps a person live independently at home by assisting with activities of daily living, among other responsibilities depending on a client’s needs. Duties can include assisting with meal preparation and light housekeeping, assisting patients in moving from the bed to the bathroom and/or changing bedpans and garments, and they can administer basic medications.
CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants) also perform many of the same HHA duties as well, however the CNA can provide slightly more advanced medical care. The CNA is required to work under a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse, to whom they report their patients’ conditions and progress. CNAs cannot perform certain medical tasks due to liability and legality. They will monitor oxygen levels and vital signs, administer medications prescribed by a physician, dress sutures and change wound bandages— and other duties under the direction of a registered nurse or doctor.
The term “home care” refers to any type of care (medical or non-medical) that is provided for the client in their home. While home care can be used to describe both medical and non-medical care, typically “home care” should be seen as non-medical care such as companionship/homemaking services and personal care services, while “home healthcare” refers specifically to skilled nursing care and other care such as speech, physical or occupational therapy.
